A Word About Water

All parrots need a fresh supply of water throughout the day. This means cleaning out their water bottle or dish and replacing the water at least once a day. Water changes are needed more often if your bird poops in his dish or dunks his food.

When bringing a new parrot into your home it is important that find out what type of water dispenser your bird is accustomed to so that you can make him comfortable in his new home. In the early days with your new pet  it is best to offer water in  both a familiar container and the new one until you are sure that your bird is drinking from the new container.

Bottles must be checked daily to ensure that they are operating properly and that your clever bird has not figured out how to plug up the spout, or drain the bottle.

Water dishes can become contaminated quickly and this can lead to rapid growth of bacteria which in turn can make your bird sick. Dishes should be checked often and changed as soon as possible if they become dirty. If it is not practical to change the water as often as may be need throughout the day, then a water bottle may be a good solution.

Many a parrot loves to bathe in a dish of water, so you may wish to provide a bathing dish which can be removed once he has finished his bath.
